Wildfire in Rocky Point prompts evacuations

ROCKY POINT, NC (WWAY) — On Saturday a large wildfire prompted mandatory evacuations for parts of Rocky Point as crews worked to put out the fire, per the Pender County Fire Marshal’s Office.

The fire was off of N.C. Highway 210 and U.S. Route 117 near Ashton Road and McCrary Road. All evacuees were directed to Heide Trak High School.

As of 6:05 pm on Saturday, the fire was 95% contained but remained active. Aircraft were deployed to drop water on flames.

As of 8:30 pm on Saturday, the fire burned an estimated 450 acres. No injuries were reported and all residents were allowed to return to their homes. No structures were damaged in the wildfire.
